Best Online Guitar Lessons 2023 – TrueFire Review!

See if this sounds familiar-

You play a little guitar and want to play better, but no matter how many tabs you find and YouTube videos you watch it never seems to come together.

Something is missing.

I know how you feel.

That was me before I stumbled on TrueFire guitar lessons online.

Why TrueFire Lesons Are The Best Online Guitar Lessons

I’m not a professional guitarist, and I doubt I ever will be that good but that’s not my goal. I’m a hobbyist who enjoys playing guitar and who wants to get better.

I’m not looking for a total guitar make-over to turn me into the next rock star. I just want steady, forward progress.

That’s the thing about learning guitar – you need to keep at it!

Sure, I wish there was a magic pill that would turn me into a guitar god over night, but there isn’t any.

Success requires persistence and routine.

TrueFire makes it easy.

What I can do since I’ve been using the TrueFire online guitar lessons is play guitar far better than I ever thought possible.

This is why…

Learn Guitar Tips from the masters!

TrueFire offers guitar lessons taught by professional guitarists, with years of experience.

Here’s a sampling:

  • Steve Vai
  • Robben Ford Guitar Lesson
  • Frank Vignola
  • Laurence Juber
  • Johnny Hiland
  • David Grissom
  • Dweezil Zappa

Courses cover individual songs or techniques or theory from a broad range genres and styles:

  • Blues
  • Country
  • Folk
  • Rock
  • Fingerstyle
  • Slide
  • Jazz
  • Metal

Songs are performed in their entirety and then broken down, step by step with 3 different camera angles.

This part alone is worth every penny because you get all the tips, inside and out often from the composers themselves!

Here’s a sample lesson from Steve Vai:

Tommy Emmanuel is not only one of the most talented finger-style guitarists in the world, he’s also a gifted teacher. His passion for sharing his knowledge and craft is on full display in these lessons.

TrueFire also has tons of lick compilation lessons broken down by genre.

Music Theory as it relates to the guitar has never been easier. Here’s an example of practical applications of music theory from the Efficient Guitar series:

Here’s a screen shot from one of my courses: Little by Little, by Tommy Emmanuel:

You can see a couple of things from this screen shot:

  1. There are a TON of views and breakdowns available for each lesson. Ex: this shot shows the tri-camera view of the performance of Halfway Home. There are also 4 other camera views of the performance :
    1. Wide – the full screen, single camera view of Tommy playing the song
    2. Left Hand 1 – single camera, full screen view of his fret hand from a more or less straight on view
    3. Left Hand 2 – single camera, full screen view of his fret hand, angled from the headstock
    4. Right Hand – the strumming (or in this case picking) hand
  2. Those are just the performance views. Each view is also available for the breakdown, or lesson portion of the course.
  3. For some lessons, TABs and backing tracks are also available in the bottom view.

Why You Should Consider TrueFire Online Guitar Lessons (My Personal Story).

I’ve seen programs like this in the past and the courses are usually poor quality, or very expensive – or both! This is not the case with TrueFire. The courses are all high quality and most contain 3 camera views so you can see the left hand front two angles and the right hand all in sync to get the best view for what you’re learning.

The price of downloads typically ranges from $12 to $30, but they have frequent sales and I’ve even gotten a number of courses for $5 during “12 days of Christmas” and similar sales.

I hate spending money on something I’m not going to use and I had been bitten in the past by various “online guitar lessons”, so I was cautious about TrueFire in the beginning. But I have to say that they have been the best use of my time and money, next to having a 1-on-1 in-person lesson. I’ve gotten over 50 different courses that suit my style interests and skill level and I’ve made more progress as a player in the 10-20 minutes a night that I use these course than I had in the first 10 years of playing!

Online guitar lessons – free!

TrueFire have a number of free lessons that rotate periodically. You can browse the current set here.

They also have a host of free jam tracks available too, so you can play along with a given style and key to find your groove or hone your technique. Again, all exceptional quality.
